The school social worker is a qualified member of the district that supports students' ability to learn and teachers' ability to teach by using their expertise in coaching and facilitation to maximize the capacity of all school staff to effectively meet the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students. The school social worker also provides specialized support to homeless youth according to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Act, students in out-of-home placement, incarcerated youth, and migrant families.
The school social worker also facilitates team meetings between the county, school, and family; helps coordinate and provides mental health services, connects families with resources to meet basic needs; and leads teams in using data to make decisions around student interventions.
