Communication Plan
As the beautiful fall leaves change and fall, it’s time to start planning for wintry weather. While we hope we can remain in school throughout the winter season, sometimes Mother Nature has other plans. If the weather makes transportation to and from school unsafe, we will contact families and staff as soon as possible to notify them of any changes to the school day. Notification is made using our BrightArrow communication system which uses the contact information you entered at the beginning of the school year during online registration, or the more recent contact information if you contacted your child’s school with alternative contact information after the school year started. If you have NOT been receiving regular communication through phone, email, or text, please contact your child’s school to ensure we have accurate information on file and you receive these critical messages. Additionally, the district will post closures on our website, Facebook, Twitter, local radio, and tv stations.
Depending on the timing of the inclement weather, changes to the school schedule may include (a) two-hour delay, (b) an early release, or (c) full cancellation of the school day. Two-hour delays mean that all busing will run two hours later than on a typical school day and all BASD schools will begin at 9:50 am. Two-hour delays give school maintenance staff and highway crews time to clear the roads after a large overnight snowfall. Early releases occur when an imminent significant weather event is expected later in the afternoon. All BASD students will be released at 12:20 pm during an early release. Please keep in mind that BHS students have open campus and will have lunch from 11:45 am - 12:20 pm so BHS students may arrive home earlier than 12:20 pm if they choose not to stay at school for lunch and they walk or drive their own cars. Finally, for full cancellation of the school day, you will be contacted on or before 6 am via phone, text, email, website, social media, tv, and radio.
If students are released early or school is canceled for the full day, all afterschool and evening events will be canceled and the buildings will be closed. This closure affects all school and community group use.
Additionally, if school is canceled for any reason, students will not be expected to participate in any synchronous or asynchronous schooling. We know that families have different internet and hardware access, supervision capabilities, and ability levels to help support their students learn during inclement weather days. Instead, we encourage families to enjoy the day, to the greatest extent possible, by connecting with one another, making a snowman, watching a cozy family movie, or enjoying hot chocolate, and not worrying about completing school work.
The safety of students, staff, and families is the district's main priority. If you do not feel safe sending your child to school, please contact the school office to ensure we know your child will be absent. Thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility. We will communicate with you in a timely fashion using multiple communication channels if school needs to be canceled for any reason.
