Special Education & Section 504
The Berlin Area School District is committed to ensuring all students with disabilities receive their federally guaranteed free, appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment. We offer a range of services to students with disabilities through Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans. requiring special education. Within an evaluation process, students are determined eligible by meeting criteria, developed by state or federal law. Once determined eligible, a plan is developed and students may begin receiving services and/or accommodations upon parent permission. Through collaboration, data-driven goal setting, implementation of accommodations, and specially-designed evidence-based interventions, students with disabilities achieve at high levels and are engaged and valued within the school setting.
Data-driven problem-solving within a tiered system of support at each building and student-specific referrals determines the need for a student evaluation.
If you have a concern about your child at school, the first step is to reach out to your child’s teacher or counselor. They can share about your child’s daily experiences and may be able to provide immediate support or guidance. If your concern persists or requires further attention, you can contact the building principal who can help you connect with the appropriate school staff member.
If you believe your child has a disability, reach out to the Director of Pupil Services and Special Education. The Director of Pupil Services and Special Education coordinates the initiation of all evaluations so they can help you decide on whether or not to make a formal referral for an evaluation for your child.
