Inclement Weather Plan

Superintendent Dr. Emmett Durtschi carefully considers various factors and consults multiple resources before making decisions related to weather conditions. These decisions prioritize the safety and well-being of all students, and while they may not perfectly align with the individual circumstances of every student or the preferences of parents, the Berlin Area School District (BASD) administration strongly supports parents in determining what is best for their child(ren).
Criteria for Deciding School Closures Due to Inclement Weather
When evaluating the need for school closures, early dismissals, or late starts, the following factors are taken into account:
Freezing rain
Snowfall of one inch per hour or greater
Snowfall accompanied by winds exceeding 40 mph
Existing and predicted snow, ice, high winds, and severe drifting
Air temperature of -25°F or lower
Air temperature of 97°F or higher
Wind chill of -35°F or lower
Heat index of 105°F or higher
Fog conditions that reduce visibility to less than 200 yards
Additionally, the following conditions are considered regarding the impact of inclement weather:
Damage to school buildings
Failure of essential utilities (gas, water, electricity, or sewer service)
Other emergencies that may threaten the health or safety of students, staff, or community members
Availability of bus transportation
In making weather-related closure decisions, the Superintendent consults with local police, the local bus company, national and local weather services, and neighboring school districts. It is important to recognize that the decisions made by neighboring districts do not solely dictate BASD's actions regarding school closures.
