Inclement Weather Plan

The weather in Wisconsin can be quite variable, from beautiful, clear, and calm days to severe cold, ice, snow, and even heat in the summer. As we sometimes say, “If you don’t like the weather in Wisconsin, wait five minutes.” In the case of weather, it is important to be prepared for all possible weather scenarios.
While our goal is to remain in school during the winter cold and summer heat, sometimes the weather has other plans. The safety of our students and staff is a top priority and we want to do everything we can to keep everyone safe while also remaining open for school.
How do we decide whether to close school due to severe weather?
When making decisions regarding any potential school closures, the Superintendent utilizes all available resources to make the final decision. These resources include consulting local meteorologists, the National Weather Service, checking in with public works employees, consulting transportation partners, and personally monitoring road conditions.
What factors are taken into consideration?
The following are some of the variables the Superintendent uses to make decisions regarding school closures:
Freezing rain and ice
Snowfall rates
Snowfall accumulation
Predicted snow and ice
Road temperature
Air temperature
Extreme cold or heat warnings
Damage to school buildings
Failure of essential utilities
Other emergencies
How are families and staff notified of school closures?
If the weather is severe and the Superintendent determines that school will be closed, we will contact families and staff as soon as possible. We utilize email, text, and recorded phone messages. In addition to direct communication, we also post on our website, Facebook, local radio, and television stations. Please watch for all methods of communication when you are aware of severe weather and suspect a possible school closure.
If school is closed are evening programs impacted?
If school is closed for the entire day, typically all afterschool and evening activities are also cancelled. Please pay attention to the communication regarding any adjustments to other activities.
What if I don’t feel safe about my child attending school in severe weather?
The Superintendent makes every effort to keep schools open for our students, while also balancing the safety of all students, families, and staff. The decision to keep schools open or to close due to severe weather may not fit your individual or family circumstances. We support you making decisions that are best for your children. If you choose to keep your children home due to the weather, please submit the absence on-line or call the school office and give the reason for the absence as weather related. The absence will be excused.
