Future City/Rube Goldberg

Middle School

Future City/Rube Goldberg is a STEAM course (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) that incorporates engineering skills and practices.  Students will study city planning and dynamics in preparation for the  Future City competition.  This will be accomplished with a virtual online city building experience and the building of a physical scale model of a city of their design.  During the second half of the course, students will prepare a whimsical multi-step       machine that accomplishes a simple task.  The top machines will represent Berlin Middle School in the State Rube Goldberg competition at the end of the trimester.  In both projects, students will discover the processes of engineering such as   brainstorming, project design, project implementation, problem-solving, iteration and presentation.  (for 6th, 7th or 8th gr.—may take multiple times)
