Middle School Science

Sixth Grade Science focuses on the Physics of Sound and Light, The History of Life on Earth, the importance of Plant life to to the flow of energy in Earth’s ecosystems.

  • Developing and using a model to make sense of phenomena and solve problems about the history of the Earth.
  • Analyze and interpret data to make sense of phenomena and solve problems within Plate tectonics and large-scale system interactions.
  • Developing and using models to make sense of phenomena and solve problems related to wave properties.
  • Constructing and supporting explanations to make sense of phenomena and solve problems related to information technologies and instrumentation.
  • Argue from evidence to make sense of phenomena and solve problems about ecosystem dynamics, functioning and resilience.
  • Construct an explanation to make sense of phenomena and solve problems to predict patterns in social interactions and group behavior.
  • Develop a model to make sense of phenomena and solve problems to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem.

Seventh Grade Science emphasizes the cross cutting concepts of the NGSS to teach the core ideas within Physics, Human Body Systems, Cells and Heredity and Earth Science.

  • Developing a model to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in the Earth's materials and systems.
  • Constructing and supporting explanations to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in plate tectonics and large-scale system interactions.
  • Analyzing and interpreting data of phenomena and/or solve problems in natural hazards.
  • Developing a model to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in structure and functioning of systems.
  • Investigating to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in growth and development in organisms.
  • Developing a model to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in organization for matter and energy flow in organisms.
  • Constructing and supporting explanations to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in information processing.
  • Developing a model to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems with traits.
  • Investigating to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in forces and motion.
  • Investigating to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in conservation of energy and energy transfer.
  • Analyzing and interpreting data to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems in relationship between energy and forces.

Units of study in Eighth Grade Science include: Weather & Climate, Space Science and Matter & Its Interactions.  Students make sense of science concepts through small group work, hands-on activities and the development of models to demonstrate their understanding.

Eighth Grade Science includes the following Power Standards:

  • Developing and using a model to make sense of phenomena related to the universe and its stars.
  • Conducting an investigation to make sense of phenomena within the universe and its stars.
  • Construct and support an explanation to make sense of phenomena involving the Earth and its solar system.
  • Asking questions to help made sense of phenomena and/or solve problems concerning the role of water in Earth's surface processes.
  • Developing and using models to make sense of phenomena in weather and climate.
  • Analyzing and interpreting data to make sense of phenomena in weather and climate.
  • Evaluating and communicating information to explain phenomena and solve problems related to the structure of matter.
  • Developing and using models to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems regarding chemical reactions.
  • Using the Engineering Design Process to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems concerning conservation of energy and energy transfer.

Construct and support explanations to make sense of phenomena and/or solve problems concerning energy in chemical processes in everyday life.
