Art: The arts are an essential and fundamental part of a student's education. The arts cultivate creativity, discipline, and team work. These skills are necessary to succeed both during and after completion of school. The process involved in creating art develops one's creative thinking and imagining, problem solving, creative judgement in cooperation with other mental processes. Students trained in art-related skills have greater assurance of opportunity in an expanding job market.
Art classes at Berlin High School are designed to provide experiences related to both individual and class goals. The order of events and involvement related to these experiences are subject to the indiviudal needs, abilities and talents. Berlin's art program provides an opportunity for the idividual to discover his/her greatest potential for self-expression and gratification.

A basic survey course which covers the fundamentals of a variety of art techniques in two and three dimensional design. Areas to be studied : design elements and principles, with and empahsis on drawing, painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics and art history. The diversity of art materials being explored, prepares the student for the upper level art classes.

This course emphasizes continued drawing skill studies to better develop ideas that solve art problems. Students will learn to understand design concepts through the use of various drawing materials.
Methods of drawing and printmaking are introduced that will lead to the creation of product design, fashion illustration, wildlife sketching, book illustration, calendar art, logo design, and or package design. Students have the opportunity to compete in various art competitions.

Students have the opportunity to explore the two dimensional aspects of drawing and painting. Expanding on their knowledge of art elements, students will focus on composition with an emphasis on design principles. The knowledge and skills developed through drawing, are used as solutions to painting problems. Various metods are used, both experimentally and traditional. Included will be the study of pencil, ink, charcoal, pastels, conte crayon, watercolors and acrylics. Students will learn various painting styles; modern and traditional. Artists, art history, and process will be included in the area of study.

Sculpture provides the student wit opportunities, knowledge and skills needed for expression in three-dimensional form.
Exploration in paper, wood, plaster, soapstone, metal, cardboard, wire, clay and recyclables will be included. Methods will include carving, modeling, assembling and casting. Contributions of world cultures and artists throughout history are the foundationof the study of sculpture and jewelry.
Students will develop the skills and understand the process involved in the study of jewelry making (metals). A basic understandng of the needs and problems of designers in this field will be studied. Areas of concentration are: pewter casting, acid etched copper, cutting and soldering silver, bezel stone setting, forging metal and lost wax casting. Art history and cultural jewelry design will be integrated into the course work.

Students will be concerned with problems of designing in clay. Topics covered are: sculptural and functional forms for everyday use, pottery formation-pinch, coil, slab, mold and wheel thrown along with surface decoration including glazing and firing methods. The relationship of clay to chemistry, geology, and early culture will be emphasized.
031-1/2 Ceramics 2 (10-11-12) Prerequisite Ceramics 1 1 Trimester - $10.00 fee
Students will be concerned with problems of designing in clay. The class willcover a wide range of ceramic studies including sculptural and functional forms. Techniques in coil, pinch, slab, mold and wheel throwing are learned. Surface decoration, using stains, glazes and underglazes will be studied along with various firing processes. The relationship of clay to culture, geology, and histor will be connected to the projects made. An appreciation for ceramics used in early cultures to contemporary expression will be emphasized.
032-1/2 Ceramics 3 (10-11-12) Prerequisite Ceramics 2 1 Trimester - $10.00 fee
Students will have the opportunity to explore wheel throwing and altered wheel thrown forms. Advanced techniques in assembling, covered containers, experimenting with decoration and outdoor firing techniques will be explored. Students will have the opportunity to expand prior technical knowledge toward creative expression.
033-1/2 Applied Design 1 (9-10-11-12) Prerequisite Art 1 1 Trimester - $10.00 fee
This course is very practical in terms of value beyond the classroom. Projects are designed with an emphasis on the appreciation of cultural arts and crafts. Areas of study include fabric design, stained glass construction, basketry, fiber arts, leather and beadwork, handmade books, soft sculpture, handmade paper and sandpainting. These projects are made with and understanding and appreciation of world cultures.

936 1/2 Independent Studies in Art (11-12) 1 Trimester - $10.00 fee
Independent study will be based on elegibility and proficiency in the area being studied. A contract between the student and teacher will be agreed upon. the student will be expected to develop a portfolio, keep a sketchbook, and participate in art shows.
Note: All levels of the same course, except Art 1 and Ceramics 1, meet at the same time. EXAMPLE: Sculpture 1-2-3 meets the same period but with different levels of expectations. A student can only take one level per semester.
