Business and Information Technology Class Descriptions
** NEW Berlin Business & Computer Technology Courses **

Envisioning Your Future. 

 The Business Department will be proposing new and updated business classes for students to select from for next school year. Most classes will be offered for Dual Credit ? Berlin HS Credit and MPTC Credit. Mrs. TB and Mr. Konrath encourage you to look over the list carefully.

 Enrollment in courses offered by the Business Department will assist students in gaining a broad business background and good communication skills applying knowledge to real life, developing employability/work based skills, and being computer literate.

 Berlin High School Computer Technology Courses  

 Internet and Computer Concepts  
This course emphasizes the impact of computers, both personally and in the business world. It will examine the fundamentals of computers, particularly with respect to computer hardware, software, and the World Wide Web. Students will interact with a computer by using the Internet. This class will require small and large group activities. Internet and Computer Concepts allows students to keep up with the changing world of business and technology. Students will learn how to use new input technologies such as PDA's, Tablet PC's, and voice recognition. Students will not only learn how new input technologies relate to the business world, but will also be able to use these technologies to improve his or her study skills. General computer knowledge such as computer ethics, computer careers, computer operations and computer history is also covered. 

 ** Students in Internet and Computer Concepts will earn technical college credit for two college courses: Computer Essentials and Computer Literacy. **

Introduction to Computers  
This course is a must for anybody who plans on using computers in the future for any reason. The most important aspect of this class is to give students the ability and knowledge to use, troubleshoot and operate a personal computer. Students will learn to key with good technique and improve their speed and accuracy. They will develop computer skills pertinent for today?s computer world. The remainder of the class involves computer basics, working in the Microsoft Windows Environment, formatting letters, school reports, and tables into the proper format excepted by businesses and colleges across the world. The High School Introduction to Computers course is designed to increase speed and accuracy (goal 40 wpm) in alphabetic and numeric skills, and will increase occupational/educational effectiveness as well as improve the chances for on-the-job promotion. The students will also learn business terminology and become proficient in English mechanics so that they can communicate effectively in the business and personal world. This course is recommended regardless of student?s career interest.

** Students who have successfully completed Keyboarding/Information Processing in middle school or high school may advance to any other technology course. **

Microsoft Office I   
Business and colleges both agree that Microsoft Office is a must class for all students planning to go on to technical college, four year college or business. This course provides students with an overview of how businesses utilize computers and Microsoft Products. Using Microsoft Office, students will become experts in Microsoft Word and Excel. We will cover skills essential for today?s computerized world. We will create CD?s, movies, labels, brochures, business cards, flyers and much more. Students will learn to download files, graphics, and text and import them into documents in order to create professional looking documents. Microsoft Office students will become flexible learners in the rapidly changing world of computer technology, participate in interactive labs, experience assignments dealing with computer literacy and information literacy and develop an appreciation of the World Wide Web.

** Students in Microsoft Office I will earn technical college credit for two college courses: Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. **

 Microsoft Office II   
Students will learn advanced word processing, spreadsheet, desktop presentation skills and core database skills using Microsoft Office XP. These skills provide students with the opportunity to learn the entire Microsoft Office Software Package at the expert level. Students will also complete an integration project using all Microsoft Products. This class will introduce you to advanced features of word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop presentation skills using Microsoft Office XP. Our main emphasis will be learning PowerPoint and Access Software to allow students the opportunity to earn technical college credit at the expert level.

** Students in Microsoft Office II will earn technical college credit for two college courses: Microsoft Access and Microsoft PowerPoint. **

Microsoft Office III  
In this course students will earn technical college credit in Advanced Microsoft Word. They will become Advanced Microsoft Word Experts. Students will also learn advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint techniques. You will learn how to create a variety of presentations that include movies, audio, digital images, advertisements and computer animated projects. 

 ** Students in Microsoft Office III will earn technical college credit for one college courses: Advanced Microsoft Word. **

Web Page Design: Dreamweaver and Flash  
In this course students will be exposed to various World Wide Web resources. Not only will they learn how to create web pages, they will learn how to use browsers, search engines, E-mail and up-load productions to the Internet. Dreamweaver and Flash will be employed to teach the fundamentals of web site design and operation. In addition to developing their own website, the school district web site will be the focus of lab exercises for students. Students will also assist the teaching staff with publishing class related materials, lessons and links to their curricula materials. Students will still be able to learn and use the Microsoft Front Page program during this course. Students are encouraged to retake the class at a more advanced level on an independent study basis. This course will take students beyond the basics of creating home pages and introduce them to powerful features such as Active Server Pages, forms and database linkages, cascading style sheets, user feedback forms, image maps, and simple CGI scripts. In addition, students will learn development of web design strategy and methods for creating graphics specifically for the World Wide Web.

** Students in Web Page Design will earn technical college credit for one college course: Dreamweaver & Flash. **

Advanced Web Page Design
This course expands upon content in Web Design and Development I as students learn new techniques to enhance websites such as digital narratives, video editing, advanced Flash, and interactive server page technologies.  Students will learn and apply techniques to work with client websites using the Macromedia Suite.  Students will perform the tasks involved in the process of strategic planning, implementing and maintaiing a website in a team-based environment.  They will address specific taks in the process such as website design, planning and development, obtaining domain names, registering websites, end-user analysis, statistics, testing and troubleshooting, training and presentation issues.
 
 
Berlin High School Business Courses

Accounting I The student is taught the fundamental principles of double entry accounting and is given the opportunity to make practical application of account to business. This course provides an understanding of the basic elements and concepts of double-entry accounting systems. Automated accounting principles are integrated into various activities. Any students interested in any area of business should be taking two semesters of accounting. 

Accounting II 
This accounting class is taught as an honors course. The course provides a procedural approach to understanding the accounting cycle for a sole proprietorship business and also a merchandising business. After mastering the accounting cycle manually, accounting cycle simulations will be completed on the computer. Topics covered include accounting for sales and accounts receivable, purchases and accounts payable, banking procedures, payroll and payroll taxes, notes payable and receivable, merchandise inventory and long-term assets. A good math background is recommended. 
 
Banking & Money Management 
We now have financial expert Dave Ramsey Curriculum.  He integrates and synthesizes the six major arenas of personal finance. Emphasis is on planning and managing personal finances, formulating strategies for making effective purchasing decisions, understanding the role of insurance in risk management, applying effective investment strategies, and taking steps to control one's financial future. This course is designed to give the student practical experience in managing personal finances. Topics of study include reviewing career decisions, studying money management, discussing financial security, dealing with credit management and discussing the dealing of resource management, such as housing, and purchasing an automobile. When completing the study of money management, students will learn to use the Quicken software program. MPTC credits available  

Entrepreneurship - School Store II 
This course will be a continuation of Business Management I.  In addition to managing the school store, students will discover entrepreneursip skills, e-commerce, and maintaining the school store web page. Instruction includes management functions, decision making, public and human relations, the school store web-page, as well as the Business Cycle. A major project will be the continuation of the operation of the school store. Students will take part in management and accounting roles as well as oversee the financial aspects of the school store. 
 
Introduction to Business Management - Berlin School Store 
This course is designed to help students understand basic concepts of management, entrepreneurship, and the characteristics, organization, and operation of business as a major sector of the economy. It will present entrepreneurship as a career path that is worthy of consideration and provide students with a realistic framework for starting their own business. Instruction includes a general overview of American business; forms of business ownership, and management functions. A major project of the class will be the operation of the school store. The students will order, price, stock, advertise, and sell merchandise.   

Business and Personal Law
Provides a general background to the elements and characteristics of business law. Business law covers the legal status of a minor, torts and crimes, recent consumer protections laws, and study of contract. Emphasis is placed on how business law is structured and how it functions in our society. The main portion of the course is devoted to an understanding of contracts and contract structure. MPTC Credits available   

Business Protocol
In this class you will learn how to apply business etiquette to enhance your professional life. Practice business introductions, meeting etiquette, including interviewing skills, and phone and e-mail courtesy. Enhance your professional image through appearance, relationships and communications. Explore handling of ethical dilemmas. This class is also offered for Dual Credit, ½ BHS and 3 MPTC credits 

 

International Business

International Business is a class with will survey the interrelationships of world business operations; give an introduction to current conceptual perspectives, including cultural, educational, political and economic constraints, the international financial and trade frameworks and problems and challenges facing the multinational corporation. The class will also focus on skills that are critical in adapting to cultural diverse environments. Students will explore the factors and qualities that influence cross-cultural effectiveness. Students will also self-assess their readiness and adaptability to work and live in culturally diverse environments and develop skills they can apply in cross-cultural settings. Field Trips will expose students to cultural activities and participation will be required. Dual credit will be offered with BHS ½ Credit and 2 MPTC credits will also be offered for this class.  


Sophmore, Junior or Senior Standing  
  
Marketing Principles 
 Provides an integrated overview of the marketing concept and functions. Major topics include the marketing environment, distribution, pricing, product planning, promotion, market analysis and segmentation, marketing opportunities and consumer and industrial buying behavior. Students who sign up for this class will be unable to sign up for a BHS class first hour during first and second trimester.  
 
Technical College Credits 
By earning a grade of C or higher, students have the opportunity to earn 1-3 technical college credits for this course. Taking this course at Berlin High School is equivalent to taking a course at Moraine Park Technical College . Students will complete the paperwork to register for the 3 credits at the beginning of the semester. At the end of the semester and having earned a grade of C or higher, the student will receive a certificate by mail from Moraine Park Technical College indicating they have received 3 technical college credits.

 

Independent Study Business Principles  
Students must complete the course work covered in the first Business Principals class. These students will be required to help set up and manage the school store, order merchandise, keep records, and help to train the other students who will be working in the school store. This will require some time outside of class hours.
